Best choice: Dallas Manufacturing

The Dallas covers are 300 deniers, making them a strong option for those that want a rugged heavy-duty product. And even better, they have enough faith in their product to offer a lengthy 3-year warranty.

This exceptional boat cover for a Jon boat is strengthened at the bow and stern, and also uses web loops and trailering straps.

That mean you can secure the whole thing down, tow, and have the peace of mind your prized Jon boat will have superb protection.

Cheap choice: Classic Accessories

This cover is very cheap, but it’s from a reputable manufacturer so well worth a look. It comes with a handy storage bag, is in a nice olive green color, and has Classic Accessories patented marine weather protection fabric to guard against mildew and mold.

With air vents to prevent moisture build-up, an elastic cord to secure the cover around your boat, non-scratch D-rings, and straps, it’s the best universal economy cover on the market.

Unfortunately, it only comes with a 1-year warranty, but at this price I don’t think that’s a deal breaker.

You’ve probably heard of Classic Accessories as they are one of the biggest names in the boating market – their 14-foot Jon boat cover has excellent online reviews. You can read the Amazon reviews and check the low price now.

Best 16-foot Jon boat covers (+ more)

Best choice: Goodsman (covers for 12, 14, 16, to 18-foot boats too)

Goodsman manufacture high quality covers, suitable for Jon boats of all lengths. The advertise themselves as being the best covers on the market, and although I don’t own their product, I can’t really disagree based on having friends who own these.

You get 300 deniers, a durable, waterproof, and well-designed cover with double-stitching UV protected materials.

You get a storage bag, rope, stretch cords, and a decent warranty. Read the reviews and see the current prices on Amazon.

Best 18-foot Jon boat covers

Best choice: iCover (covers for 12, 14, 16, to 18-foot boats too)

Just like Goodsman, this manufacturer ranges the sizes. But its an 18-footer you own, this would be my choice. Why? Because you need decent buckle straps at this size, and that’s exactly what you get with an iCover.

Other than that, there’s not much to separate iCover from Goodsman, but the deal breaker could be the money back guarantee they offer.

If you are entirely satisfied with your purchase, they will give you your money back with no questions asked!

Best Camo Jon boat covers

Camouflage is hugely popular in the Jon boating world. Previously I’ve written guides about camo seats (read that here). If camo is your thing for hunting and fishing, then you need a cover in that same style and pattern.

Best choice: Komo Covers

Unlike the other covers in this guide, the Komo Cover has a massive 600 deniers of polyester, making it the strongest product I am recommending today. It’s a super heavy-duty product that will last you for years, no matter what punishment you mete out.

And it’s in a camo color too, so ticks all the boxes for the majority of Jon boat owners. As with the other covers in this guide, it also comes with a storage bag, trailer and tie down straps.

You can purchase this camo Jon boat cover for 10 to 12-foot and 12 to 14-foot boats, with beam sizes ranging between 52 and 62 inches.

Take a look at what people are saying on the Amazon listing.

Cheap choice: Leader Accessories

This cover is available for boats between 10, 12 and 14 foot. It tends to be cheaper than the Komo camo cover shown above, primarily because the denier rating isn’t as high.

Don’t let that put you off though, as it’s still a quality product with everything you would expect including; camo color, marine grade polyester, tie down loops and rings, air vents, UV resistance, waterproofing, and storage bag.

The price tends to vary, so look on Amazon to buy this camo cover.

Jon boat cover buying guide

I appreciate that me just recommending some of the best covers on the market still leaves you a little to do in terms of making a decision. If you need a little more assistance, read my tips below which can help you decide exactly what you need.

Handy Hint: Have you seen my guide to the best Jon boat accessories money can buy?

This details the features which you ideally want in your new cover.

Air vents

Spend a little more and buy a Jon boat cover with air vents in it. Air vents will help prolong the life of your cover, and protect the inside of your Jon.

It’s a very simple reason, having those air vents will reduce any moisture and damp gathering inside the boat and cover.

Air vents will also help prevent the wind picking the cover up, tearing it off, or ripping the material.

Shock cords and straps

A cover with sewn in shock cords or straps will also help to prevent wind lofting, letting you secure it snugly around your boat.

Strapping down the cover securely will also help to protect against the rain and any critters who think your Jon is a nice and warm place to nest in.

Trailering straps

The best covers are the ones that come with trailering straps so you can quickly and easily tie your cover down and better secure your Jon onto your trailer.

Heavy duty polyester or weather protected marine canvas

Some of the best Jon boat covers are the ones that have been weather-treated. Most of those will be the heavy-duty polyester variety, as that acts as a shield against the sun’s UV rays and mildew.

I don’t believe that there are any non-waterproof covers in the market, but just double check the rating before you buy.

Re-enforced fabric

When you pull the cover over your Jon boat, you are going to be placing quite a bit of stress on the seams and material.

Look for one which comes with re-enforced fabric at the stern and bow areas as this is where weak points can typically occur. The higher the denier rating, the better as this will make the cover more resistant to rips and tears.

I recommend a denier rating of 300 or higher.

You can also find covers for sale which use re-enforced web loops sewn into the tie down areas for additional strength.

Covering your outboard motor

If you don’t have a cover for your outboard motor, take this extra length into account when ordering. In fact, even if you do have a covered motor, I would still recommend that you opt for a longer boat cover so you can double-up on protection.

If you have an outboard motor mounted onto a bracket or jackplate, then simply add that length onto the length of your boat when choosing which cover to buy.

Some covers you see available to buy will come with an extra motor hood.

Supporting your cover

If your boat is kept outside with its cover on, it’s key to have a support inside the boat to pitch the cover up. This will help with ventilation and also stop water or snow gathering.

You might not need a support if you leave your pedestal seat in the upright position, as this will work just as well.

Cover storage bag

I am a tidy freak, and like organization. Bearing that in mind, nothing annoys me more than having a bulky cover strewn on the ground.

When I bought my cover, I chose one which came with a storage bag and it was worth the extra few dollars.

Manufacturer warranty

If you don’t see a warranty or guarantee, it suggests that the manufacturer isn’t confident in their own product.

If you see a 1-year warranty, then avoid. Go for something with 3 years or up.

The longer the warranty the better, and it’s not uncommon to see 5 year guarantees on some Jon boat covers.

The different boat covers for Jon boats

There are 3 different types of cover; standard (or universal), semi-custom, and custom-made covers. In this guide, I am recommending the ones that you can simply buy “off the shelf” rather than custom made ones which you will have to source a supplier of yourself.

I’ve always found that the universal ones work fine for most Jon boats, unless you have made some extra-ordinary modifications.

Don’t buy cheap

If you buy cheap, you will end up buying twice.

There are some very cheap boat covers on the market, but these are the ones made from poor quality material and components, and they will end up ripping and tearing after a few months.

Buy a heavy duty, weather resistant, well-fitting cover as it will be worth the higher price that you pay.

Overall, the price of a cover will be inexpensive compared to the cost of buying the boat itself. Prices can range from $20 for cheap and terrible ones, all the way up to $200 for more custom ones suited to a particular boat brand and model.

The last word…

If you own a flat-bottomed Jon boat, you will know what a versatile vessel they can be. They can also withstand a lot of punishment whilst your fishing, hunting, or just cruising down stream.

But just because they are built to last, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take every precaution in trying to make yours last as long as possible.

If you leave it out in sun, rain, or snow it will become damaged and worn over time.

That means you have repairs and clean-ups to make, when you could be spending that money on the latest Jon boat accessory, or spending the time enjoying your boat.

Whilst they are very easy boats to maintain, your life will be a lot easier and cheaper if you invest in a boat cover for your Jon boat before it’s too late.

I’ve had first-hand experience of birds and mice nesting in my older Jon, and it wasn’t a nice surprise after winter when I took her out of the garage.

I now have a secure cover which I strap down and secure into place, and I’ve not had those issues since.

Don’t delay, get a Jon boat cover today, and let your worries slide away!
