You love fishing from your pontoon boat, and who doesn’t? It’s a great way to pass the time.

In this new blog post, I’ve compiled a top 13 list of the best (and worst) DIY fishing rod holders for boats that I have seen on the Internet, all of which you could quite easily re-create and place on your own pontoon. Some of them are very creative, but let’s be honest, some I would never let near my own boat! Take a look further down the page and see what you think.

Handy Hint: Here is a list of the best rod holders you can buy for your pontoon, which will save you having to make your own.

If you do want to build DIY ones yourself, then admittedly it should be relatively easy. But, I don’t really see why you would. The price of fishing rod holders has come down significantly in recent years, and you want to have a stress-free day of fishing, it pays to invest in the correct equipment.

So, before I show you those homemade pontoon rod holder ideas, I do encourage you to head on over to my recommended pontoon rod holders that you can buy today on Amazon – all are reviewed and rated.

But without further ado, here are my favorite homemade rod holders for pontoon boats that I have found on the Internet, saving you the time and trouble in having to find them yourself.

The PVC Piping Idea

Don’t you just love PVC piping? It’s amazing what you can do with it, and as the photos and ideas below show, they can be adapted to hold your fishing rod.

There are three different approaches shown below.

If you fancy attempting this DIY homemade project yourself, then there are plenty of videos available on YouTube which go into a little bit more detail. For example, the one below, whilst not on a pontoon boat, should give you some inspiration on how you can use PVC piping to make your own homemade rod holders.

Homemade PVC Rod Rack

Whilst looking into homemade rod holders for pontoon boat owners, I also stumbled across another person who had used PVC piping, but to make a rack rather than a rail holding. You can see how it works below plus a couple more ideas.

Metal Welded Homemade Rod Holder Ideas

If you fancy yourself as a bit of a metal worker, are handy with a metal cutter and welder, then perhaps you could construct something a little bit more robust. Although having said that, make sure you use the strong aluminium or galvanized steel so the holders don’t corrode in a salt water environment. Here are a couple of metal examples.
