Have you ever dreamed of owning a yacht and then realize how expensive they are? Well, if you thought normal luxury yachts are expensive, then wait until you see the prices of superyachts!

These stunning vessels are renowned for high end living, entertainment and pleasure, some of them being able to take you all over the world. Superyachts are certainly an expensive investment only available to very small proportion of the world’s super-rich – but what dictates their cost and expensive exactly?

Why are superyachts so expensive? Superyacht are expensive because they come with the best of the best in luxury, are much larger than regular yachts. For example, you will find bathrooms, bedrooms, kitchens, and will also require a large crew and staff members, further inflating the costs of ownership.

Designers of superyachts imagine every possibility and then design a yacht based on needs. Most superyachts have everything you could think of and more. The best part is, despite its beauty, they can still be raced and used for entertainment.

How expensive can a superyacht cost?

Any yacht will cost a lot of money. The more feet of length you add, the more amenities and accessories out into the yacht will determine how much you can buy it. Here is a list of yacht and superyacht prices; you can also read more about what determines the overall cost.

Under 80 feet

This yacht size can range in price between $15,000 and $35,000; many things can change this factor. If it comes with the fastest engine on the market, the design and if you hire a crew.

Over 80 feet to 120 feet

These yachts can range between $35,000 and $80,000. The get more expensive depending on the size of crew, license, destination, and duration can change the pricing as well.

120 feet to 150 feet

Getting bigger in size will again make owning the yacht go up in price again. These run anywhere from $80,000 to $150,000. This size and price could technically be considered a superyacht depending on the owner.

150 feet and over

Believe it or not, some superyachts come over this size! In 2013 one of the largest ever superyachts were launched, and it was 590 feet. They are very expensive.

According to Forbes.com, here’s how much a superyacht could cost:

“On average, a 100-meter superyacht with a top speed of 25 knots and 50 crew members should cost around $275 million. Considering the 30 largest superyachts are all longer than 100 meters, they can often cost significantly more.”

The larger superyachts will need more people in the crew to help maintain everything. Most times, the bigger the yacht is, the more likely it will be used for parties or cruise trips.

What is the difference between a yacht and superyacht?

A yacht is a luxury boat that you can own privately that has all of the luxuries you would need to live life. A superyacht is identified as a commercially run yacht that is much bigger than a typical yacht.

This means you have a whole crew that can take care of things on board; you can simply sit back and enjoy the ride. A superyacht can be 79 to 590 feet in length.

Handy Hint: Here’s a guide I wrote that explains exactly when a boat qualifies as being called a yacht.

All superyachts have a crew area below decks that you may not be able to see while onboard. They get free room and board if they work on the yacht. Certain sizes of yacht cannot operate without having a captain and crew; here’s what sizes mean regards staffing.

This is yet another aspect with contributes towards why superyachts are so expensive and are only the preserve of the mega-wealthy.

However, there are lovely luxury yachts under 75 feet that you operate on your own if you have a boat license. Anything over that amount will mean you need a crew, and that is still one of the expenses you will have to pay for on your own.

What luxury facilities do superyachts come with?

A superyacht can be one of the coolest experiences to go on if you have the opportunity, and there are a few things you can expect to find in a bigger yacht. Since you have a whole crew to take care of things on board, you can enjoy all of the superyachts amenities without worrying about anything else. Here is what you can expect.

  • Hot tubs: On a lot of bigger and newer yachts, you can find hot tubs or spas that allow you to relax in hot water at night. They can either be found in the front or the back of the yacht and will have some incredible views.
  • Gym: You will not find a huge gym, but there will be a small gym that a group of people can use while on the yacht.
  • Sauna: Not in all superyachts, but in some, you may find saunas where you can go and sweat out all the toxins. It can be one of the best ways to relax.
  • Massage: Some of the crew may be on board to help you relax. There could be a space on the yacht where you can get a massage or even a couple’s massage.

Oh, and if you’re worried about being able to get the Internet at sea, don’t be. Superyachts will spare no expense in making sure you can connect to WiFi – here’s how.

Every yacht is different and will have different accessories and amenities. Not all superyachts are the same, and all the designs will be different.

Do superyachts depreciate in value?

Just like with any other purchase like a car, your superyacht will depreciate in value, especially if you do not keep it well maintained. This means the value over time becomes less than what you paid for. This can be a great concern if you plan on trading it in the future, or selling it when you are done.

Generally, the first year you buy a yacht the value will go down by 15%-20%, the second year will go down by about 10% and then the years after that it will fall steadily and slowly. After a few years, it will only go down by 7.5%. This is not nearly as fast as some other things you could buy in your lifetime.

Can you live on a superyacht?

Yes! It does, however, depend on what you buy and what it comes with. Some people couldn’t even imagine living on a boat or a yacht. Most of these superyachts are big enough that they have special places for the crew to live onboard for the time they are at sea.

Superyachts do come with many amenities that a house may not even come with. They can come with rooms, fully equipped, gyms, saunas, pools, and full kitchens. This could be better than a house or apartment!

Handy Hint: Some superyachts can stay at sea for a very long time. Here’s how long you can travel for on a yacht.

You may be able to live on a superyacht, but it will still cost as much money as living in a house. Sometimes it could cost more than living in an apartment. Living on a boat can cost around $2,200 a month. A yacht may cost more.

If you have a large superyacht, you will have to pay a crew, pay for gas, pay for food, and more! It can add up to be expensive.

The last word…

Superyachts are some of the coolest looking boats you will ever see on the water. If you have a chance to experience one in person, you should take the opportunity. But be prepared to spend big, as even chartering a small yacht can cost thousands of dollars!

The designs are sleek and attractive, be the interior can be just as stunning. Each yacht has a specific purpose and creation; you can race one or vacation on one. Both opportunities will give you the biggest thrill in your life!

However, being realistic, superyachts are so expensive, that it’s going to take a very large bank account to even begin considering getting aboard.
