Whilst choosing a name for your boat might not seem as important as some of the features you need, it really is critical. Think of all the money, time, and effort you are going to spend on it; it deserves a great name surely?

Last week this idea came to mind, as I was speaking to a retired airline pilot down at my local marina. He was in the process of buying a new pontoon boat. I asked if he had a name in mind, and he told me he hadn’t even considered it yet.

I explained how it had taken me weeks to come up with funny name for my own pontoon, so promised him I would help him and come up with a list of boat names for pilots. You can see the result of my research below.

Funny boat names for airline pilots

As of yet, he’s not chosen one of these airline pilot themed boat names, so they are completely open to be used by anybody else who works in the aviation industry.

Having said that, there’s nothing wrong with having the same boat name as someone else; just make sure it’s not on the banned boat name list!

Naming your boat name as a pilot should not be taken lightly. With some thought and time, you should be able to come up with an idea that reflects the type of boat you own, or your own personality.

If you have spent years as an airline pilot or working in the aviation industry, a pilot themed boat name could really mean something personal to you.

It will tell everyone else a little bit about who you are. Just be sure to choose something that is reasonably short (no more than 3 words), distinctive, easy to spell and pronounce, and not too rude.

If it makes you happy though, that’s the main thing.

Before you settle on your final boat name for a pilot, say it out loud a few times. This will give you a sense of how it could work, should you need to make a distress call over VHF radio.

Does it sound like it will be easily understood and not cause confusion when spoken over the airwaves? If so, it’s good to go.

And lastly, try to avoid anything that could be embarrassing.

After all, your boat’s name is a representation of you and all who ride in her.

The last word…
